The University of Alberta, Augustana Faculty invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean, Advancement. 

The Assistant Dean, Advancement reports jointly to the Dean and Executive Officer of the Augustana Faculty and Campus and the Senior Director Faculty Development (Social Sciences). Working closely with the Dean and Executive Officer, the Assistant Dean, Advancement is responsible for identifying, designing and supporting the various advancement priorities identified by the Dean, including work in development, alumni relations, and related communications. The Assistant Dean, Advancement is a valued and integral member of the senior administration at Augustana.

Key Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Supervising and engaging with major gift moves, research, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Supporting institutional development activities both within the campus and with the wider University
  • Administration of the campus’ Advancement Office
  • Managing Alumni and Community Relations
  • Overseeing communication efforts of the Advancement Office


Preliminary Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated, with excellent interpersonal skills and excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with both academic leaders and senior university personnel, and with volunteers
  • Experience managing and motivating a team or staff
  • Appreciation of the mission of a major research university and the ability to match creatively the University’s highest priority needs with the interests of qualified major gift prospective donors
  • Proven ability to develop strategies for and implement major gift solicitations
  • Familiarity with and ability to communicate the value of small undergraduate campuses like Augustana which value a liberal arts and science education in a residential context
  • Ability to effectively engage with the people, communities, and culture of East Central Alberta
  • Familiarity with the “moves” management process
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of full-time fundraising experience in not-for-profit organizations and/or educational institutions, and demonstrated ability to plan and execute a fund drive
  • Experience securing gifts in excess of $1 million
  • Experience working at large-scale ($100 million) post-secondary or other campaigns strongly preferred
  • Possession of a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification in considered an asset


The Augustana Campus enrolls about 1050 students in baccalaureate degree programs on a picturesque residential campus in the city of Camrose, 90 km southeast of Edmonton. Augustana is committed to building on its reputation for rigorous, high-quality teaching in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences, and, in doing so, provides a distinctive undergraduate academic experience for students within one of Canada’s leading universities. Augustana is the only Canadian member of the 29-member Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, an alliance in support of superior, accessible higher education. The Committee will begin considering candidates in early August 2017; however, the competition will remain open until the position is filled.
