RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • It will be expected of successful candidates to teach at undergraduate as well as postgraduate level;

  • Actively undertake original research projects that lead to research outcomes/publications;

  • Participate in the Department’s community service programmes;

  • Act as study leaders/supervisors for postgraduate students.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Qualification:

LECTURER

  • A BEng degree in Mining Engineering from a University of which the undergraduate programme is recognized by the Washington Accord or is recognized by ECSA to be substantial equivalent; plus

  • Magister in Mining Engineering or a Masters in an appropriate field; 

  • A proven research record of research supported by publications in peer reviewed journals and creative production output.

SENIOR LECTURER

  • A BEng degree in Mining Engineering from a University of which the undergraduate programme is recognized by the Washington Accord or is recognized by ECSA to be substantial equivalent; plus

  • PhD in Mining Engineering or a PhD in an appropriate field; 

  • A proven research record of research supported by publications in peer reviewed journals and creative production output;

  • Senior Lecturer must have peer related credibility in the required fields of mineral economics and risk management.

Experience:    

  • Ten (10) years’ experience in mineral economics, mine financial evaluation and safety and health related risk management involvement in industry; 

  • Appropriate tertiary teaching experience;

  • Seasoned practitioner in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act;

  • A strong mining business acumen.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Appropriate language and communication skills;

  • Industrial experience in the stated area.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • The successful candidate must be busy with or engage with directed research on taking up office; 

  • Practice experience and /or active participation in mineral economics, mine financial evaluation and risk management; 

  • The successful candidate must be in possession of a registered as a Pr. Eng with ECSA (or eligible to register as a Pr. Eng); 

  • The successful candidate should also be in possession of a Mine Manager’s certificate of competency (Department of Mineral resources, Republic of South Africa).

The position may range from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, depending on the qualifications and background of the candidates.

It will be also expected of the successful candidate to conduct research in a highly productive manner and to expand existing research programmes or initiate new research programmes. He / She will also consistently publish in leading internationally accredited journals, as well as raising and managing additional funding from national and international funding agencies and industry to support the activities.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
