Job Details

The postholder will be employed to deliver research into microbiome and microbial genomes on behalf of investigators within the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), under the direction of the BRC Director and BRC Microbial Science Research Theme. The BRC has two major vertical themes – Nutrition and Respiratory/Critical Care Medicine, and 3 cross cutting themes – Data Science, Microbial Science and Behavioural Science. The postholder will work with members of these themes to deliver analysis in two broad areas – (i) analysis of compositional and functional effects on the gut or respiratory tract microbiome of interventions including experimental treatments; (ii) analysis of microbial genome effects following interventions – e.g. microevolutionary changes or recombination events. Where funding exists the postholder will help deliver scientific activity with the PI. Where funding does not yet exist the postholder will assist PIs in writing of grants. 

The postholder will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Medical Microbiology and Microbial Genomics, and will be expected to project manage research activity, sustaining, in addition, a personal research plan, and supervising and taking responsibility for the research team linked to this work. This will include multiple projects with multiple teams.

The post is, in the first instance, a fixed term contract, initially for three years.
