Job Details
Main Supervisor: Prof Eugene Healy
Other members of the supervisory team: Prof John Holloway, Dr Mat Rose-Zerilli
Duration of the award: 3 years full time PhD studentship
Full time or part time: Full time
Project description: Ultraviolet radiation (UV) in sunlight is a “double-edged sword”; exposure to UV causes genetic mutations in skin leading to development of skin cancer but, conversely, UV promotes vitamin D synthesis and is also used to treat skin diseases, including psoriasis. This study will use next generation DNA sequencing to investigate the mutational load in skin from UV exposure in relation to skin cancer development, thus informing on safe UV exposure levels in a unit which has significant experience in this type of research. The applicant will receive training in genetics/UV/skin carcinogenesis under the supervision of a team comprising Prof Eugene Healy (Professor of Dermatology, Clinical and Experimental Sciences, University of Southampton), Prof John Holloway (Associate Dean for Research, Genetics/Human Development and Health, University of Southampton), Dr Mat Rose-Zerilli (John Goldman Fellow, Cancer Sciences, University of Southampton) and will undertake the research in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton.
