Job Purpose

This is an opportunity to work with an international team who are developing an exciting new resource for students to help them understand and deal with the issue of gender based violence (GBV). University of Birmingham are leading the project with collaborators in Universities of: Glasgow, Nottingham, Auckland, Melbourne and British Columbia. The project is part of a new research programme on Risk, Abuse and Violence (RAV) led by the School of Nursing, University of Birmingham: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/nursing/research/rav.aspx
The project last 12 months and has three parts. The research fellow appointed to the project will work closely with the PI engaging in a range of research methods as follows:
1) A survey of students and educators in each of the six participating universities. The purpose is to identify the key components of a new GBV resource. Survey responses will be analysed by the research fellow at University of Birmingham with the supervision of the PI.
2) A draft GBV resource will be developed working closely with the HELM e-learning team at the University of Nottingham. University of Nottingham are experts in the field of developing RLOs

3) A small-scale pilot study and evaluation will take place in each participating university to ‘test’ the new GBV resource. This will be conducted virtually and will be followed by a series of evaluation discussions using webinar. The webinars will be co-ordinated by the research fellow at University of Birmingham in liaison with the co-applicant in each country. The finalized GBV resource will be available open access and the project will be published in a peer reviewed, open access academic journal.

Person Specification

The skills and qualifications required for this post are as follows:
• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
• High level analytical capability
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes

The main responsibilities are:
• Analyse and interpret data including survey development and e-resource development
• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
• Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
• Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
• Undertake management/administration arising from research
• Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
• Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
• Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews *
• Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters *
• Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research *
• Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines*
