Job Details

An exciting new research position is available to conduct morphing aircraft research as part of a €6M, 3.5 year long EU H2020 project on Shape Adaptive Blades for Rotorcraft Efficiency (SABRE), led by the University of Bristol. The SABRE project will bring together six research organisations from across Europe to develop ground-breaking new helicopter blade morphing technologies. As part of this, research into a novel blade stiffness control and resonance avoidance method enabled by active tendons will be taking place at Bristol.  This work will combine structural dynamics and aeroelastic modelling with extensive experimental testing, and will focus on development of this promising concept for use in the challenging rotary wing environment.

You will be responsible for the development of analytical/numerical models for dynamic and aeroelastic analyses of blades with integrated active tendons. Additionally, an extensive experimental program involving mechanical system design and blade-tendon integration studies as well as benchtop and whirl tower dynamic testing will be performed.  This work will build off existing models and ongoing research to increase the fidelity of the methods used, the depth of understanding, and the achievable performance of the concept.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Brano Titurus, project partners, and a team of SABRE researchers at Bristol, will attend project meetings hosted by the partners (in Italy, Germany, and The Netherlands) and will contribute to project deliverables and dissemination activities. There is also the opportunity to provide supervision of summer interns and undergraduate student projects and mentorship of PhD students.

Informal enquiries about this position can be made to:

Dr Brano Titurus, Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Dynamics
