The Institute for Biomedical Ethics at the University of Basel (IBMB), Switzerland (http://ibmb.unibas.ch/), is dedicated to research and teaching of biomedical ethics at the Medical and Science Faculties. Currently we are looking for several dynamic and independent graduate students or medical doctors who are interested in carrying out their PhD work on different ethical topics including (a) mental health of aging prisoners; (b) smarter health care; and (c) open topic of their choice. All positions are fully funded either by the Swiss National Science Foundation or are funded research assistant positions.

Position Available: Starting July 2017 / Negotiable (2018 will be a possibility for (c), the open topic position)

Length of PhD Program: 3 years

Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree in law, bioethics, medicine, and other related fields.
  • Excellent language skills in English.
  • Ability to speak and understand German and /or French is highly desirable.
  • Willingness to contribute towards an empirical project.
  • Excellent Master's and Bachelor's academic grades.
  • Enthusiasm, responsibility, and interest in an academic career.
  • Ability to implement an already designed research project OR design his or her own project if open topic research assistant position is chosen.

We offer:

  • Students will complete empirical methods courses as part of the PhD Program in order to successfully conduct their PhD Project.
  • Students will gain knowledge and understanding of bioethics, biomedical ethics, and research ethics.
  • Students will also have the possibility to contribute to the academic life at the IBMB, including contributions to teaching, as well as collaboration in other research projects and academic publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Enrolment in a Swiss Bologna accredited 3 year PhD Program in Biomedical Ethics.
