Job Details

The Centre for Environmental Science in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment (FEE) at the University of Southampton invites applications for a Lecturer in Environmental Science.

You will provide high quality teaching and student support in Quantitative Methods and Field Skills in the academic field of Environmental Science, along with contributions to other parts of the Environmental Science Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes.

You will be responsible for leading teaching and assessment on the following modules: ENVS1005 Quantitative Methods; ENVS1006 Environmental Science: Research and Applications; ENVS3011 Environmental Field Studies; and ENVS6010 Work-based Learning. Further to these key modules there is the expectation of minor contributions to ENVS1004 Environmental Science: Concepts and Communications; ENVS1007 Field Techniques and Applications; and other modules if required as part of the Environmental Science Programme Delivery team. In addition, you will also be required to supervise a small number of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Research Projects.  An experienced member of the Environmental Science teaching staff will provide support and guidance for all teaching, assessment, and research project supervision work.  It is expected that you will commence a full teaching load and student support from the start of Semester 1 of Academic Year 2017/18.

The ability to deliver a range of innovative teaching and assessment approaches is essential. The Centre for Environmental Science has an outstanding reputation for high quality student support and feedback.  You will contribute to the continuation of this reputation and to strengthen our degree programmes by contributing to strategic education developments.

This Lecturer post is primarily focused on delivering exceptional teaching and student support. However, as expected of a position in a Russell Group Institution you will also demonstrate a passion for research and will be publishing in leading international journals, and ensuring research-led teaching is a key part of your educational interaction with undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Ideally, you will have experience of, or the ability to develop, industrial links to coordinate the Work-based Learning module and act as the Environmental Science Employability Officer. This will facilitate collaboration and development of the taught programme as well as advancing scholarship, research and enterprise in the broader Environmental Science subject areas. It is hoped the successful candidate will contribute to increase the interface between Engineering and Environmental Science education and research.

You will need to have a full UK Driving License as you will be required to drive students during field courses.

For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Simon Kemp (s.kemp@soton.ac.uk)(Head of Centre for Environmental Science) or Professor P.Temarel (p.temarel@soton.ac.uk) (Head of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering and Science).

You will join one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering and environmental research and education rated number one for research power in REF2014.  We have an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad.

The Faculty has nearly 200 academic staff working in a number of research themes (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/research/themes.page). We have exceptional research facilities particularly in our state-of-the-art facilities at our new Boldrewood Innovation Campus (fluids and structures/infrastructure) which includes a 138m towing tank.

In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering we were awarded an Athena SWAN bronze award in September 2013 and again in Autumn 2016. The Faculty will give due consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy*, onsite childcare facilities and employees are able to participate in the childcare vouchers scheme.
