Job Details

The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP).

The University of British Columbia, established in 1915, is one of the world’s leading universities.  It is located in Metro Vancouver, a dynamic metropolitan region of over two million inhabitants on the west coast of Canada. A rapidly growing gateway to the Pacific Rim, Vancouver is at the forefront of urban planning and renowned for its commitment to sustainability. The region offers a dramatic natural context supporting diverse urban, suburban and agricultural landscapes. Together, the city and region provide an ideal laboratory for the study of urban planning and sustainable urban development.

SCARP is a discrete administrative unit within the UBC Faculty of Applied Science, which also includes the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, comprehensive engineering departments, and the School of Nursing. As such, it encompasses the entire built environment and promotes ‘Sustainable Smart Cities’ as a cross-faculty priority research pillar.

Founded in 1951, SCARP is one of the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive planning programs in Canada. Its core program, the professional Master's in Community and Regional Planning (MCRP), is accredited by both the U.S. Planning Accreditation Board and the Canadian Planning Standards Board. The MCRP offers customizable specializations in planning as well as Urban Design and a pioneering Indigenous Community Planning specialization. SCARP has a strong research tradition and also offers thesis-based master's (MA/Msc) and PhD degree programs. Select courses are taught at the undergraduate level. In collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering, SCARP provides an Urban Systems specialization in the Master's in Engineering Leadership (MEL) professional program. The School has 13 full-time faculty, 13-15 adjunct faculty, and approximately 100 students.

Job Role

SCARP is seeking a Director to provide leadership during an exciting period of growth and transformation. SCARP is currently expanding its breadth of degree programs, and is building up a number of existing specializations such as Engineering Leadership in Urban Systems, Indigenous Community Planning, etc. The Director will be a dedicated, visionary and collaborative academic leader, with a distinguished record in teaching and research, and a strong commitment to educational programs. The successful candidate must have demonstrated leadership abilities and proven skills in management, communication, consensus-building, advocacy, and strategic planning. They will hold a Ph.D in Urban and Regional Planning or a closely related field, and must qualify for a tenured academic appointment at the rank of professor in the School. Additional experience in fund-raising and diversifying departmental revenue models would be considered a valuable asset.
