Job Purpose
The post-holder will provide specialist technical assistance to Dr. Daniel Gibbs’ research team. He / she will make a significant contribution to research in the lab that seeks to investigate how plants use targeted degradation of the proteins in their cells as a mechanism for sensing and responding to signals. The post holder should be conversant with a range of molecular biology, genetics, and protein biochemistry techniques and will be expected to work independently using their own skill and judgement to solve problems within their area of expertise/defined work environment. Prior experience working with plants (from a scientific perspective) is highly desirable.
In addition to performing key experiments associated with this project, the post-holder will also be responsible for the general maintenance and day to day running of Dr. Gibbs’ laboratory area (including attending to equipment repairs, maintaining a regular supply of basic lab essentials) production of COSHH forms and the performance of other tasks as required, including supervision and training of students.
The post holder will provide support for and contribute to College activities under the direction of the College Technical Support Manager as required. Person Specification Essential:
• Degree or equivalent professional qualification in an appropriate subject
• GCSE (A*- C) or equivalent in mathematics
• In-depth practical knowledge of technical and scientific methods stated above and good laboratory practice gained through extensive experience and formal qualification
• Extensive experience of similar laboratory based work
• Positive service attitude and shows courtesy in dealing with others
• Ability to organise and manage own work load and demonstrate flexibility in terms of work practices/requirements
• Ability to work under minimal supervision but function as part of a team
• Knowledge of current relevant H&S policies
• Proficiency in commonly used software packages(including use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
• Good working knowledge of molecular biology techniques and theory (PCR, western blotting etc.)
• Good Microbiological Practice and aseptic technique.
• Excellent organisational skills and understanding of the importance of maintaining online laboratory databases.
• Ability to work on own initiative, manage time effectively, progress tasks concurrently and work to deadlines.
Desirable:
• Registered scientist status or working towards registration
• Experience working with plants (from a scientific perspective)
