Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton

The Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (formerly the Environmental Epidemiology Unit) was established in 1979 and is within the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Southampton based at Southampton General Hospital.  The MRC LEU studies the causes of chronic disease by epidemiological methods.  The main programmes of research are in the areas of heart disease and diabetes in relation to maternal nutrition and fetal growth, osteoporosis and neurological disease, and occupational and environmental hazards.

Our staff includes doctors, nurses and midwives, statisticians, nutritionists, computer programmers, research assistants, ultrasonographers, survey workers, secretarial, clerical and support staff; we also work closely with the NHS staff.

This is a fantastic opportunity for dynamic paediatric nurses to work in clinical research in established and new intervention trial(s) and/ or to conduct research on a unique longitudinal population study. Studies are carried out in a clinic setting at Southampton General Hospital and the Princess Anne Hospital, as well as in the local community, and so applicants will need access to a car and a valid driving licence. The post will be based in the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at Southampton General Hospital.

We are seeking to recruit committed and flexible paediatric nurses for the infant’s follow-up. If you are a registered paediatric nurse (RSCN or RN Child) with post registration experience, excellent communication skills, and a willingness to learn; we would love to hear from you. Knowledge and experience of research is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided. Some work will be out of normal working hours to accommodate assessments; including for women who are working and for children when they are not at school.

Full or Part-time hours are available; to be negotiated. In the first instance this is a 1-year fixed term appointment. Salary dependent on previous experience (NHS pensions may be continued in this post).

An enhanced Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) check is required for this role.

Informal visits are most welcome. For informal enquiries please contact Julia Hammond at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, Southampton General Hospital, SO16 6YD, tel:  023 8076 4017 or email: jfh@mrc.soton.ac.uk.
