Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation Professor of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (ORLHNS)

Primary Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation Professor of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (ORLHNS) will be to provide leadership in clinical research to improve ORLHNS outcomes in the region.

The successful applicant will also undertake clinical service responsibilities and provide academic leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.

The appointee will be a full time employee of the University of Auckland but will have a dual employment schedule with 0.6 FTE devoted to and remunerated from clinical duties.

Key Attributes and Academic Background

To be considered for the position you are a scholar who has demonstrated international eminence and excellence in clinical research in ORLHNS. The successful applicant will have a track record of high quality original research, secured significant peer reviewed grant income and published widely in the most influential journals in the field.

The applicant either through their own work or through the leadership of a team/network of researchers across the University and the health care sector will have demonstrated the ability to collaborate with other disciplines to facilitate the translation of new ORLHNS techniques and therapies into clinical trials and thence to clinical use.

Furthermore you will be a well-rounded educator who is able to ensure that a research-led teaching programme with respect to ORLHNS is integrated into the relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Faculty.

A key role of this appointment will be leadership, particularly in ensuring that the many groups with Auckland and across New Zealand involved in work in this area are engaged in the development of academically robust ORLHNS research.

They will be expected to develop and communicate a vision for research and effective practice in their DHB and will demonstrate outstanding communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the DHB and University.

Qualifications and Background

The individual appointed to this role will have a medical qualification (registrable in New Zealand) and specialist qualifications, along with a significant academic background, in ORLHNS. They will preferably hold a higher research degree (either PhD or MD).

The appointee will ideally have an outstanding record in the following areas:

  • Previous academic leadership and outstanding research related communication skills.
  • Significant experience as a clinician in both clinical and leadership roles.
  • Extensive ORLHNS research experience, evidenced by peer reviewed publications and changes neurosurgical practice implemented as a result of research activities.
  • A proven academic with a demonstrated ability to lead, supervise and inspire teaching and research.
