SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION AND ARTS

The School of Communication and Arts is a large, research-intensive unit with an international reputation for outstanding research and teaching in Communication, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Film and Television Studies, English Literature, Art History, Public Relations, Creative and Professional Writing, and Drama. It has over 50 academic and research staff and 11 professional staff. Our academics are widely published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds. The School is one of seven schools within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and is based on the St Lucia Campus.

The School has been organised to enhance research and teaching strengths in Communication. Communication has been recognised as one of the top 20 research strengths at UQ and was awarded a top score of 5 in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) research assessment exercise.

The School teaches into the Bachelor of Communication, the Bachelor of Journalism, the Bachelor of Arts, and the Bachelor of International Studies, and it offers a suite of postgraduate coursework programs in Creative Writing; Writing, Editing, and Publishing; Public Relations and Communication for Social Change. The School attracts a large number of Australian and international students to its research higher degree programs, which may be undertaken as PhD or MPhil.

The role

The University wishes to appoint a scholar or practitioner of outstanding international reputation in the fields of Journalism or Communication for a fixed renewable period of four years. The chair is the sole UNESCO chair in its area. Accordingly, the appointee will lead national and international debate about, and research into, the practices of contemporary journalism and communication. As well as leading public discussion, the appointee will contribute to our research reputation and teaching programs at undergraduate, postgraduate coursework, and research higher degree levels.

The person

Applicants should possess PhD qualifications in the field of journalism/communication or an international reputation as a practitioner in the fields of journalism or communication. They should lead an established internationally-recognised program of high-impact, peer-reviewed research or demonstrate international leadership in the public discussion of journalism and communication practices. They should also be able demonstrate expertise in curriculum design in journalism and communication or demonstrate expertise in contemporary journalism and communication practices which could contribute to field-leading curriculum design.  The person requires proven ability for high level teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, proven mentorship and executive leadership skills, and the capacity to lead and work with multidisciplinary research and wider community level teams, including industry, government and professional scholarly bodies.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term four-year appointment at Academic Level E. The remuneration package will be $175,070 p.a. plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be $204,831.90 p.a.).
