The University of the Free State is one of the oldest universities in South Africa producing graduates whose qualifications are internationally recognised, locally applicable and underpinned by values of engage citizenship and social justice

We are seeking to recruit a Vice Rector to the portfolio of Operations to be filled as soon as possible.

As members of the executive of the University, all Vice Rectors (VRs) actively support the Vice Chancellor in the strategic leadership and management of the University and in supervising supportive functions through line reports.  Although each VR is appointed in the first instance to oversee particular functions, these may change over the course of time at the VC’s discretion.

Qualifications and experience:

A PhD degree would generally be required and the ideal candidate will be someone who fulfils most of the following criteria:

  • Has experience in a senior leadership role in an academic institution.
  • Has demonstrated a track record managing a complex portfolio, or running a unit of reasonable size.
  • Has a successful record of leadership and team work.
  • Has demonstrated experience in strategic thinking and operationalising such thinking into plans and projects.
  • Has an understanding of developments in the higher education arena in SA.
  • Has an understanding of the operations and affairs of a university environment.
  • Has some relevant experience in finance, conflict management, negotiations with unions and other role players of interest to the university.
  • Can operate confidently and sensitively across cultures and other divides.
  • Desirable skills and personal characteristics:

  • Approachable, flexible and change-oriented.
  • A high level of personal motivation, energy and enthusiasm.
  • Resilient and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Exceptional communication, persuasive and interpersonal skills.
  • Well-reasoned decision-making ability.
  • Ability to hold conversations as a means of achieving mutually desired goals.
  • Ability to mobilise and inspire others towards shared goals.
  • Capable in both developing strategy and operationalising strategy into plans and projects.
  • Specific responsibilities:

  • Information and Communication Technology Services.
  • Human Resources.
  • Finance.
  • University Estates.
  • Health and Wellness.
  • Housing and Residence Affairs.
  • Protection Services.
  • Directs the activities associated with the security and investment of the University’s assets and funds.
  • Term of office:

    • Five (5) years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further term.
