Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in animal locomotion? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work on a BBSRC funded study on bird flight energetics. The overall aim of this project is to provide a validated and robust approach to measuring metabolic energy, ultimately for application in the field. This project is a collaboration between Dr Graham Askew at Leeds and Dr Charles Bishop at Bangor University.

We are looking for an outstanding researcher to perform an integrated set of physiological and biomechanical measurements on birds. The majority of the work will involve performing a range of physiological approaches to quantify metabolic energy expenditure and mechanical performance at the levels of both the whole animal and the individual flight muscles. This will be done during wind tunnel flights and using in vitro muscle physiology experiments. In addition, though a smaller component of the project, some physiological measurements will also be made during free-flight experiments. These integrated measurements will provide a firm footing for understanding animal flight behaviour in the field.

You will have a PhD in a relevant area of biomechanics or physiology. A strong background of working with small animals and using in vivo and/or in vitro physiological and biomechanical techniques is essential and you should also have the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The role will be based primarily in Leeds but you will be required to spend short periods of time working in Bangor.
