Job Details

The Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPC), the leading research entity among large chemical research organizations in Poland, invites applications for a position of PhD Student (3 positions) to join: “Interdisciplinary NAnoscience School: from phenoMEnology to applicationS” (NaMeS).
The NaMeS is a research training programme of IPC intended – in particular – for PhD fellows in theoretical chemistry/physics. The programme, benefiting from former IPC achievements in nanoscience, is designed to employ the phenomenological knowledge concerning nanoscale processes to the creation of new materials applicable in industrial technology, medical diagnostics, and environmental protection. NaMeS links chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology and materials science with business. The programme is aimed at creating a new generation of scientists, capable of working in both scientific and business sectors, and becoming stimulants and intermediaries of knowledge & technology transfer on an international level.

IPC will select 3 PhD students to carry out PhD projects under supervision of at least one supervisor from IPC and one from an excellent partner institution (incl. Jena University, University Pierre and Marie Curie, and University of Ljubljana). PhD research will be accomplished both in Poland and abroad (during secondments to partner institutions).
Candidates are free to choose a theoretical PhD project from the NaMeS offer (project no. 1,2,3) and list below :

  • Evolutionary algorithms as a tool for designing chemical computers (project no. 1)
  • Effect of fluctuations in biological processes confined in nanoscale organs (project no.2)
  • Investigation of lateral distribution of components in biological membranes (project no. 3)

The PhD programme is funded by the EC under the MSCA programme (COFUND) and will start on the 1st of November, 2017 (duration: 4 years).

The successful candidate will be offered inter alia:

  • middle-term employment contract (4 years) – full time position,
  • attractive salary (monthly avg. ca. EUR 1,600 net, i.e. after all deductions),
  • 6 – 18 month secondments to the partner institutions (of co-supervisors),
  • numerous interdisciplinary professional trainings (incl. specialized & soft skills trainings) and internships - in line with Individual Career Development Plans.

For the full remuneration package see NaMeS website.

Main admission criteria:

  • Application submitted by an Early-Stage researcher fulfilling Mobility criterion [i.e. researcher who is in the first four years of their research careers, does not have a doctoral degree, and has not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Poland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date],
  • Possession of master degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, materials science, material engineering, or related fields,
  • Knowledge of English language.

Application documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (incl. contact details*), and motivational letter.

  • scan of master’s degree diploma and of an official transcript of the student’s record,

  • list of publications/ list of patents, industrial and utility design (applications or granted rights)/ list of research and/or application projects,
  • opinion of an independent researcher on a candidate, consent to the processing of the candidate's personal data for the purposes of the competition,
  • declaration that a candidate is an Early-Stage researcher fulfilling Mobility criterion (see: Eligibility criteria above),
  • documents confirming knowledge of English language.

*All correspondence with the candidates will take place solely by e-mail.

Candidates for the NaMeS programme are invited to submit applications using electronic form, (alternatively: names@names.edu.pl) by the 28th of June, 2017. Best candidates who meet the expectations will be invited for an interview (also via Skype) July, 2017. One candidate for each PhD project will be selected.
For appeal proceedings please see: NaMeS website.

The Institute is committed to employment equality (esp. European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers) and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates fulfilling the requirements specified in this announcement. Remuneration of the PhD students will be co-financed from EU funds (MSCA – COFUND, Horizon2020) and funds of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 711859.
