Job Details

A Research Associate is required to work in the area of protocell research, working under the supervision of Professor Steve Mann. The project involves the development of new methods for the construction of synthetic protocells and their collective behaviour as integrated communities with emergent properties.

Fixed term funding for 3 years (subject to completing your 6-month Initial Service Review) Salary: £32,004 - £36,001 Work pattern: Full Time

Applicants should have experience in areas such as soft matter, synthetic biology or self-assembly, and have major interests at the chemistry/biology interface. You should also have experience in areas such as microcapsule preparation and characterization, fluorescence microscopy/spectroscopy, bioconjugation chemistry, microfluidics, FACS, cell-free gene expression, cell biology, as well as knowledge of soft matter systems and their characterization. An interest and background in protocell research, synthetic biology, origins of life research or microscale robotics preferred.

Research: Contribute effectively to the research programme of the School under the guidance of a more experienced academic Principal Investigator, Professor S Mann FRS. Co-ordinate their own work with that of others, deal with problems which may affect the achievement of research objectives and contribute to the planning of the project(s) Write up results from their own research activity and contribute to the research project’s dissemination, in whatever form (report, papers, chapters, book, conference posters and presentations). Present information on research progress and outcomes to groups overseeing the research project and in wider School-based fora such as research seminars. Administration: To maintain accurate records of experimental detail and the data obtained. To read and engage in group discussions regarding published literature, in order to develop ideas and concepts that may shape future research directions and questions. Ensure that personal knowledge in relevant fields of study is kept up to date.

Additional: Engage effectively in the University’s Staff Review and Development process and develop, with advice, an awareness of their own professional development needs and a personal development strategy, engaging with continuing professional development appropriate to the role. Consistently act as a good citizen, actively participating fully in the daily working life of the School. Undertake relevant training and development activities to develop capacity for taking on wider responsibilities (including small amounts of teaching) and to support their career development. Maintain academic standards and freedom, and work in accordance with University policies (e.g. equal opportunities, ethics and health and safety policies).
