Research Fellow in Biomethanisation of CO2 Water & Environmental Engineering Group

Location: Highfield Campus

Salary:  £29,301 to £36,001 per annum

Full Time Fixed Term (until 03/09/2019)

Closing Date:  Tuesday 25 July 2017

Interview Date:  To be confirmed

Applicants are invited for a Research Fellow position to investigate microbially-mediated power-to-gas systems.

You will investigate microbially-mediated power-to-gas systems and develop continuous laboratory-scale systems for biological production of methane at high concentrations both from gas-fed bioreactors and through modification of conventional anaerobic digestion.  The research is intended to assess the optimum conditions and the performance limitations and to link these with metabolic functionality and control, in collaboration with other consortium partners.

You must demonstrate a sound knowledge of applied science or process engineering in a relevant field of industrial biotechnology, coupled with a good basic knowledge of quantitative analytical techniques. Direct experience of working with anaerobic digestion, bio-hydrogen production or gas fermentation systems will be an advantage. A hands-on approach and strong skills in experimental design and analysis are essential, along with a keen interest in developing new ideas from proof-of-principle to implementation.

You must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in environmental or chemical engineering or biotechnology.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The post funded by a BBSRC IB Catalyst grant with partners in the Universities of York and Sheffield.

The Faculty has nearly 200 academic staff working in a number of research themes (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/research/themes.page). We have exceptional research facilities particularly in our state-of-the-art facilities at our new Boldrewood Innovation Campus (fluids and structures/infrastructure) which includes a 138m towing tank.

In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering we were awarded an Athena SWAN bronze award in September 2013 and intend to submit an application for Silver in November 2015.

The University of Southampton is the top one per cent of world universities* and in the top 10 of the UK’s research-intensive universities

The University has been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.  This commits all of our staff and students to take responsibility for managing their activities to minimise harm to the environment, whether this through switching off non-essential electrical equipment or using the recycling facilities.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to Professor Charles Banks: cjb@soton.ac.uk.
