SENIOR STUDENT ADVISOR (ONE YEAR CONTRACT)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will work with scholarship recipients (Dell Young Leaders) to ensure they stay on track to earn an undergraduate degree despite significant obstacles and be supported in to the world of work. This will include implementing and executing a comprehensive, coordinated student retention programme that encompasses knowledge of financial aid, academic advising, and emotional intelligence.  This position will need to be able to evaluate causes of and solutions to student attrition which encompass a wide range of factors and influences. This position will advise Dell Young Leaders individually and in groups about the development of educational plans and the resources available at the University of Pretoria.

The incumbent will be based at the University of Pretoria, and report to the Dell Young Leaders Programme Manager, who reports into the Deputy Director for Education and Innovation at the University of Pretoria. As this is a growing programme, the incumbent will need to be comfortable with change, and follow through on strategic guidance at the behest of the Director for University Success at the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A bachelor’s degree or a masters’ qualification from a leading university.
  • A driver’s licence.
  • Capability to use technology on a daily basis including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and advanced formatting in Microsoft Word.
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience.
  • Willingness to travel locally.

  • The successful candidate should have empathy and a passion for improving the lives of young adults, and possess the maturity and judgment to be an effective representative of the programme. He/she will bring experience, wisdom, and energy to this role, along with a strong passion for the mission of enabling financial aid students to graduate from university.  The ability to analyse student academic and situational results each semester and recommend program changes to improve student success Embodiment of the highest levels of stewardship and ethical leadership in administering the resources for the programme He/she will have the utmost integrity and reputation for doing things the right way. The candidate will be a team player, consummate multi-tasker, and have the capacity to get up to speed quickly.  He/she will be a self-sufficient professional who is both bottom line and results oriented. The candidate will know how to utilize contacts and relationships to accomplish various tasks.  He/she should be very good with details and follow through. The successful candidate would need to possess a comfort level for data and technology This position does require the successful candidate to work outside business hours and travel within South Africa.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    Prior experience working with tertiary students.
  • A passion for education, creative problem solving, and empathy towards young people.
  • Ability to function under pressure;
  • Self-motivated and disciplined;
  • Knowledge of MS Office – MS Word, Excel, GroupWise

 

PLEASE NOTE: All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R409 263.13 – R541 807.15 (40 hpw) as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
