DEPARTMENT OF ANCIENT LANGUAGES AND CULTURES
LECTURER IN GREEK

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
- Supervision of masters students;
- Research at a nationally competitive level;
- Organising undergraduate modules as required;
- Academic administration and other duties as determined by the Head of Department;
- Participating in the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching and learning, research and community engagement.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- An Honours degree in Greek (Classical Greek/ Hellenistic Greek) with a Master’s degree in Greek or a related/applicable discipline, e.g. Latin/ Semitic Languages/ Classics ;
- Appropriate teaching experience in the applicable field of expertise;
- Basic supervision skills;
- Research outputs appropriate to the post level and/or applicable field of expertise.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Knowledge of Greek language (Classical and/or Hellenistic);
- Knowledge of basic linguistic theory;
- Knowledge of the background of the Greco-Roman world;
- Appropriate language and communication skills
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- A Master’s or doctoral degree in Greek (Classical/Hellenistic/Biblical);
- A proven research and publications record of accomplishment in the specialised field;
- Competency in Hebrew, Latin and the New Testament World.
The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 437 905 to R 579 726 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
