Fixed term contract for 48 months due to funding restrictions.
We are recruiting a researcher in Underwater Photogrammetry to support a project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council.
Successful candidate must have:
- an established track record of published research in the field of underwater photogrammetry,
- significant experience in collecting seafloor imagery during scientific research expeditions,
- experience in software development in and programming in c++
- PhD or equivalent professional qualification in underwater photogrammetry or similar subject.
The research activities of the project will involve the development of a deep-sea 3D seafloor imaging instrument and a data processing pipeline that will be used to generate 3D seafloor image reconstructions, The system will be integrated on the autonomous underwater vehicles operated by the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton and will be used on scientific research expeditions. In addition to the developmental research, the candidate will be expected to carry out independent research to minimise the measurement uncertainty of the device and advance the understanding of how environmental and practical constraints limit the accuracy of seafloor reconstructions. You will be familiar with the operational constraints of underwater vehicles and have a good understanding of the propagation of light in the underwater environment, and be willing to investigate how probabilistic methods can be applied to these problems. You will participate in field-work, operate the device to collect data, and process the data collected by the device to deliver data products. Some experience in instrument design and electronics is desirable.
You will be expected to work as part of an interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists and show leadership in encouraging the activities of junior members of staff and students. You will also be expected to form collaborations with the international researchers and work closely with local industries. The expectation is that you will publish your research in at least one peer-reviewed journal publication every year, and participate in conferences and workshops as an active member of the marine imaging community.
*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
