Job Purpose

The post is split 50:50 between the University of Birmingham, College of Medical and Dental Sciences and specialty training placement in public health as allocated / approved by Health Education England West Midlands.

The successful applicant will contribute academic public health knowledge and expertise to the range of studies being undertaken within the research programmes of the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham.

Develop a personal research programme with independent nationally competitive funding or an on going personal research award and build on public health skills by undertaking public health specialty training (50%).

 

Person Specification

  • PhD or MD in a public health or population health research field
  • MB BS/MBChB or equivalent
  • Completed as a minimum Part A of the Faculty of Public Health exams (MFPH) and evidence of acceptance onto or undergoing public health specialty training in the UK
  • Evidence of achievement in designing, executing and presenting public health research
  • High level understanding and experience of epidemiological research methods
  • Experience of gaining ethical approval for research
  • Evidence of publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Experience of working with and communicating effectively with people from a broad range of backgrounds
  • High level of computer literacy
  • Experience of supporting research staff to develop projects and to understand and apply real world issues relevant to public health to their work
  • Demonstration of understanding of, and commitment to, an academic career
  • Demonstration of the potential for scientific independence and the ability to lead a research team
  • Demonstrable organisational abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, teambuilding and communication skills
  • Able to work flexibly, under pressure and manage own workload
  • Willingness to undertake further training
  • Committed to the application of the principles of research governance and ethics
