The School of Chemical Engineering

The School of Chemical Engineering is an international leader in the chemical engineering field and has an excellent international reputation which has been built over four decades at the University. With 35 academic staff, including 17 professors, the School provides quality programs and leadership in chemical engineering education, research and development, and expert consulting to support the process industries. Information about the Faculty and the School may be accessed on the Faculty's web site at http://www.uq.edu.au/eait.

The role

This project will facilitate a step-change in strategies to reduce silica scaling from groundwater by considering silica and silica-rich nanoparticles in concert with hardness ions, other metal ions and organics. We will, for the first time, aim to characterise the fundamental relationships between the components of CSG water and silica scaling on RO membranes, with the view to better manage water treatment. The outcome will be more productive use of assets, including operating ion exchange infrastructure (which generates a waste stream and costs the industry in excess of $1M pa in chemicals alone) to support, rather than hinder, RO operation.

The PhD will focus on using cutting edge methods to characterise the properties of the water being treated. This will include using scanning electron microscopy and innovative nano-particle traps developed by our group. You will work with four industry partners (QGC, Arrow Energy, Santos, Origin Energy, and Waste Water Futures) and the UNESCO Centre for Membrane Science & Technology at UNSW.

Applicants need an honours Class I or IIA degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, with a very strong interest in water treatment. They will to join our research group in RQ1 2018 (January 2018)

Applicants must fulfil the PhD admission criteria for the University of Queensland, and demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research. Demonstration of research ability through publications in peer reviewed international journals is desirable.

Entry requirements can be found at http://www.uq.edu.au/study/program.html?acad_prog=7501

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion.

Applications are particularly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
