Faculty of Engineering - Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering

Applications are invited for an academic position from candidates holding a BE and a PhD and with a strong background in core chemical/process and/or materials engineering. Applicants are sought with teaching and research strengths in the key area of food/bio engineering.

The Department offers a BE(Hons) degree in Chemical and Materials Engineering which is IChemE-accredited to the level of the U.K. Masters of Engineering.  The degree has a strong process engineering core combined with a unique materials engineering emphasis.  The Department also provides service teaching in Materials Science and Engineering Biology and Chemistry to entry-level students in the Faculty of Engineering.  In addition, the Department contributes to the teaching of a BTech (Biotechnology) degree and a BSc (Hons) and an MSc in Food Science.  We also offer a MEngSt specialisation in Food Process Engineering. 

The Department currently has 22 academic staff members, an annual intake of approximately 80 undergraduate students and over 80 postgraduate students.

The main process research areas in the Department (listed in alphabetical order) are energy technology and alternative fuels, environmental process engineering, food and bio-product engineering, heat and mass transfer, process simulation and control, fluid mechanics, and separation processes.  The main themes in the Department’s materials research include (listed in alphabetical order) bio-materials, corrosion and oxidation, electronic materials, materials performance, nano-materials, process and powder metallurgy, and surface science and engineering.  There are significant collaborations between the materials and process research areas.

The Department is a key part of the Food & Health Programme at the University.  The Department is host to the Research Centre for Surface and Materials Science (RCSMS), the Industrial Information and Control Centre (I2C2), and the Product Accelerator, and also an active participant in the Light Metals Research Centre (LMRC).

 

The Person

Candidates would be expected to have a BE and PhD and a strong background in core chemical/process/materials engineering with a demonstrated ability to conduct research, supervise postgraduate students and publish in high quality journals in their chosen area of food/bio engineering.  Applicants should be able to work towards obtaining external funding to support their research programmes.  The successful appointees would be required to teach in the Department’s Chemical & Materials Engineering programme and it would be desirable to have experience and commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
