Research Fellow in Feature Extraction and Computer Vision
Applications are invited for Research Fellow in Feature Extraction and Computer Vision to join an interdisciplinary research consortium investigating the overarching question: Does developmental plasticity influence speciation? Our transdisciplinary approach to fill this key knowledge gap in contemporary evolutionary ecology fuses computer vision, micro-tomography, systematics and geochemistry.
You will have PhD or equivalent professional qualification and research experience in computer vision, feature extraction and machine learning, or a related field. As Research Fellow, your core role in the team will be to develop state-of-the-art open source software of 3D feature extraction algorithms by integrating feature extraction algorithms and deep learning techniques. This post will build on related recent developments in Mark Nixon’s Vision Learning and Control group http://www.vlc.ecs.soton.ac.uk/at the University of Southampton and in Gabriel Brostow’s Computer Vision and Computer Graphics group at University College London http://www0.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/g.brostow/
The post sits within the new, Natural Environment Research Council funded PISTON consortium across the University of Southampton, University of Leeds, University of Bristol and University College London. You should be an enthusiastic and well-motivated scientist, capable of contributing substantially to developing your own research project while also integrating fully within the multidisciplinary PISTON project as a good team-worker and excellent communicator.
This three-year fixed term post is available from 2nd October 2017.
Informal enquiries about the post can be made to Work Package Lead Professor Mark Nixon (msn@ecs.stoton.ac.uk; http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/people/msn) or PISTON Co-ordinator Dr Thomas Ezard (t.ezard@soton.ac.uk; http://www.southampton.ac.uk/~te1e12/)

The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
