Job Details

The Higher Education and Research Act 2017 establishes Research England as a Council of UK Research and Innovation and alongside the other existing Councils (the seven Research Councils and Innovate UK). UK Research and Innovation through HEFCE, invites applications for appointment to the Council of Research England.

Research England’s proposed overarching aim is to create and sustain the conditions for a healthy and dynamic research and knowledge exchange system in English universities. As a key component in the dual support system for research, Research England will oversee the England-only functions in relation to research and knowledge exchange. This includes providing grant funding to English universities for research and knowledge exchange activities (over £1.9 billion in 2017-18); developing and implementing the Research Excellence Framework in partnership with the UK Higher Education funding bodies; overseeing the sustainability of the Higher Education research base in England; and overseeing the £900 million UK Research Partnership Investment Fund.

This is an exciting opportunity to be a member of the first Council for Research England, to help shape the strategic direction and to oversee key functions with the ultimate aim of improving the economy and society. The Council will also support the transition process through to establishment of Research England on 1 April 2018.

We are looking to appoint up to ten Council members with a range of experience from higher education senior leadership, business, industry, the public sector or third sector. One of these members will be a Senior Independent Member. The applicant recruitment pack contains information on the Senior Independent Member role. Applicants should indicate if they have a specific interest in this role.

We want the membership of the Council to reflect the diversity of society. Applications are welcome from all, and we strongly encourage applications from under-represented groups, including women, people from a black, minority ethnic background, and from people with disabilities. Both UK nationals, and international candidates are encouraged to apply.

These are fixed-term appointments and we anticipate that remuneration will be through an honorarium. This will be based on up to 20 workings days per annum, which would include preparation and active engagement outside of Council meetings.

Closing date: midnight on Monday 24 July.
