Position in Religion, Violence, and Peacebuilding

Harvard Divinity School seeks to appoint a scholar or scholar practitioner to the T. J. Dermot Dunphy Professorship of Religion, Violence, and Peacebuilding. We seek a person whose work examines the significance of religion as it relates to the sources of violence and the practices of peacebuilding in the contemporary world. The candidate might bring historical, theological, sociological, or anthropological approaches to the study of religious traditions, ethnic identities, communal tensions or interfaith relations, especially as they relate to violence and peacebuilding. Applicants must be competent in research languages appropriate to their area of specialization. Excellence in both teaching and research is required.

This is an open-rank search --tenured, tenure track, or professor of the practice; the successful candidate will be appointed to the rank appropriate to his or her experience. He or she will work closely with students in the Divinity School’s masters programs and the doctoral program in the Study of Religion. It is likely that he or she will also teach undergraduates in the Comparative Study of Religion and graduate students in related departments of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It is expected that this scholar will be in conversation with those in other programs and schools at Harvard critical to the study of conflict, violence, and peacebuilding.

It is understood that applicants will employ forms of analysis that address race, gender, sexuality, and/or other intersecting forms of social power, such as womanist, feminist, and/or queer approaches. The doctoral degree must be held by June 30, 2018.

Applications should be made online at: http://academicpositions.harvard.edu. A CV, cover letter, writing sample, and the names of three references whom the School may wish to contact will be required of all candidates.  Review of applications will begin in September 2017 and continue until the position is filled.  Selected candidates may be invited to initial interviews at the American Academy of Religion Annual Meeting in Boston, MA, this coming November.

Letters of nomination are also welcome, and should be sent to:  Religion, Violence, and Peacebuilding Search Committee, c/o Matthew Turner, Harvard Divinity School, 45 Francis Ave, Cambridge, MA, 02138, or to mturner@hds.harvard.edu.  Applicants should address any questions regarding the position itself or the online application system to Matthew Turner at the above email address or by phone at 617.496.0847.

HDS is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
