Applications are invited from researchers to work as a Research Fellow in the Geochemistry Group of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton. Our group comprises of more than 30 researchers and postgraduate students applying innovative geochemical analysis and modelling to scientific questions of major societal, economic and environmental importance. We have a world-class range of analytical equipment and associated clean laboratories and our instruments and techniques are applied to applications in a diverse range of fields from the geological to the medical.
This post is funded through a Leverhulme Trust proposal to the University of Southampton lead by Professor Gavin Foster entitled “The nature and consequences of historic and future Ocean Acidification; insights from boron isotopes in corals” and involves researchers at Southampton, University of Edinburgh, University of Hawaii and the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. The applicant’s role in this multi-disciplinary project will be to: (i) generate records of ocean pH over the last 100 years using boron isotopes in tropical corals; and (ii) improve our understanding of boron isotope vital effects and coral calcification using a series of novel culture and field experiments.
The applicant should have a PhD (or equivalent) in either chemistry, geochemistry or isotope geochemistry* and should have some experience of sample preparation, clean lab methodologies, elemental purification using column chromatography, and analysis using (multi-collector) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Some experience with boron isotope geochemistry would also be beneficial. This position will also involve field work in Bermuda and/or Hawaii.
This post is a fixed-term appointment from 01/09/2017 to 02/08/2019. For further information about the Geochemistry group and related work at Southampton follow these links:

The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
