Project Manager/Data Analyst (post level 8)

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director with project planning for the range of student engagement projects at the UFS (and where applicable for national research projects).
  • Assist with planning for research projects within the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
  • Laisse with participating institutions and relevant stakeholders in national research projects.
  • Coordinate the development of the relevant survey instruments for the abovementioned projects, both online and paper-and-pencil surveys.
  • Ensure integrity of the data collected through the implementation of rigorous data management and cleaning processes.
  • Participate in decision making processes related to the design, data collection, data analysis, and methodology of the research projects.
  • Conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analysis as needed for the abovementioned projects.
  • Collaborate with other researchers within the Centre for Teaching and Learning to ensure the quality and integrity of the data analysis procedures.
  • Interpret results and draft reports based on findings.
  • Coordinate quality assurance processes related to research projects.
  • Present findings from research in appropriate fora (including conferences and journal publications).
  • Mentor and train other researchers in research processes, especially statistical analysis.
  • Manage and coordinate the research team, together with the Project Manager.

    Inherent requirements:

    • Applicable Honours Degree (obtained or currently enrolled for).
    • At least three (3) years’ experience with statistical analysis.
    • Competent in the use of computerised, statistical analysis software (either SAS or SPSS).

     

    Required competencies:

    • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University's richly diverse working environment.
    • Advanced computer skills in order to write reports and develop PowerPoint presentations (MS Word. Excel and PowerPoint).
    • Above average oral and written language competence in English.
    • Knowledge of research methodologies used in the social sciences.
    • Knowledge of variable coding and data manipulation.
    • Demonstrate understanding and ability to apply a broad range of statistical models and procedures, such as descriptive statistics, bivariate approaches, linear regression, analysis of variance, non-parametric approaches, etc.
    • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
    • Ability to work under supervision within a broader collaborative environment.
    • Highly organised.
    • Ability to work under pressure.
    • Accept responsibility and show good judgement, initiative and resourcefulness.
    • Willing to travel on occasion, as needed within the research project

    Recommendations:

    • Applicable Master’s degree (obtained or currently enrolled for).
    • Experience in the use of online survey programmes (e.g. Surveymonkey, Questback or Evasys).
    • Experience in higher education research.
    • Formal training in higher education.
    • Experience in survey design and development.
    • Commitment to and experience in higher education research.
    • Valid Driver’s licence.
