The University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, is committed to implementing its Strategic Plan by fostering Neuroscience Research, including work to understand of the basis and therapeutic opportunities in Epilepsy.  As part of our Cluster Hire initiative, we are inviting   applicants for the position of Leader, Epilepsy Research Cluster, based in the Departments of Anatomy and Neurobiology and Neurology. This position will be a Tenured Senate (FTE) Professorial position.

We are seeking to hire a senior Translational Neuroscientist (MD/PhD or MD) to lead a group of four individuals who employ diverse and complementary perspectives and methodologies to the basic and translational studies of Epilepsy. Epilepsy, the 3rd most common chronic brain disorder influences brain function at the molecular, cellular and networks levels. Thus, Epilepsy Research requires a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach.

UCI has an illustrious history in Epilepsy research, commencing in the 1970s. The Epilepsy Research Center (EpiCenter) is integrated with one of only 2 NIH-funded training grants (T32) in epilepsy research. UCI is internationally recognized in developmental, molecular and circuit mechanisms of the epilepsies and their cognitive comorbidities. The excellent basic research has recently been joined by a large clinical program where extensive imaging and direct cortical EEG recording in humans offer outstanding research opportunities.

The Epilepsy Research Cluster will interact closely with the strong and vibrant neuroscience research community with outstanding collaborative opportunities, including basic and clinical neuroscience, imaging, translational biomedical science, stem cell research, biomedical informatics, and pharmaceutical sciences. Other high-ranking neuroscience-related departments at UC Irvine include the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior in the School of Biological Sciences, and the Department of Cognitive Sciences in the School of Social Sciences.

Applicants for the position should have a strong record of scholarly activity, evidenced by high quality publications and a record of sustained extramural funding. The successful candidate is expected to have appreciation of the integration of basic and clinical aspects of epilepsy, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse academic and clinical environment. Leadership skills and vision for enhancing the visibility and philanthropic support for the Epilepsy Research enterprise are essential.
