Job Purpose

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position in development of novel nanostructures with advanced optical properties at the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will join the world-leading Advanced Nano-Materials, Structures and Applications (ANMSA) Group, one of the leading academic groups in the field of development of novel micro and nano-structures and miniaturised diagnostic technologies. We are looking for a highly motivated, bright and enthusiastic candidate with a strong background in fabrication, characterisation and development of micro to nano structured surfaces and/or devices with a familiarity optical characterisation methods. The work will also include aspects of engineering designed molecules and materials as bottom-up building blocks for large area, highly ordered diverse 3D structures on the nanoscale for a range of applications. The ideal candidate should have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science or a related area, and an excellent publication record. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in materials and thin film processing and particularly expertise with clean room and lithography. These aspects require a high level of literacy and numeracy, coupled with an ability to develop new techniques and use of unfamiliar equipment. These skills will make the associate highly employable after the post.

  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications

  • High level analytical capability

  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly

  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones

  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively

  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
