The Manager, Central Utilities O&M is responsible for safe, complaint and cost effective supply of chilled water, tower water, plant air and natural gas services to manufacturing and research operations at the West Point plant site. Responsibilities encompass engineering, operation, maintenance, shutdown and project support for assigned utility systems and equipment. Also maintains familiarity with site steam, power, potable water, wastewater and building utility systems for support as necessary.
Works with partners in Utilities, GWES (Global Workplace Solutions), GSE (Global Safety and Environment), GES (Global Engineering Solutions), Research and Manufacturing to ensure adequate capacity, backup, supply and service levels. Develops and implements operating plant strategies to optimize plant reliability and performance. Monitors and improves compliance, system/asset reliability, O&M programs, system efficiency/cost performance, energy optimization and provides technical support to partners, facility owners and engineering project/capital teams. Participates in system master planning for asset replacement/expansion, profit planning and budgeting for system operation and maintenance functions.
The Manager, Central Utilities O&M supervises up to twelve Merck craft personnel and is responsible for recruiting, development, administrative and performance management of direct staff. Manages and interfaces with contractors as required.
Qualifications
Education Minimum Requirement:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Marine Engineering
Required Experience and Skills:
- Minimum three (3) years of industrial utility system experience in operation, maintenance or technical support group, including a minimum of three (3) years of concurrent experience supervising craft personnel and managing chiller and/or refrigerant systems
- Excellent communication, leadership, teamwork and customer service skills
- Knowledge and expertise in the application of engineering standards (i.e. ASME, ASHRAE, CFR 1910, and ANSI)
- Ability to handle and prioritize a large number of simultaneous assignments and quickly adapt to changes in business priorities
- Ability to quickly address issues and develop solutions to minimize compliance risk and improve utility reliability
- Ability to both think critically as well as communicate effectively
- Strong technical and problem-solving abilities
- Experience using MS Excel
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Professional Designations: Professional Engineering License, Certified Energy Manager
- Minimum of two (2) years of industrial utility experience with steam, compressed air, electric, and/or water treatment systems
- Working knowledge of OSHA standards
- Completion of OSHA 30 hour training
- Lean, Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification or equal experience in application
- Knowledge and experience in project and facilities management
- Knowledge and experience in reliability centered maintenance
- Experience supervising salaried personnel
- Experience using PI Process Book, MAXIMO CMMS and analytical modeling tools
