Sheffield University Management School, University of Sheffield


Sheffield University Management School is pleased to announce three fully funded three year scholarships to undertake doctoral research as a part of the International Doctoral Programme (IDP)* with partners, including EGADE Business School (University of Monterrey, Mexico) and the Graduate School of Business Administration at Kobe University (Japan).

The innovative structure of the IDP provides an opportunity for excellent PhD students to benefit from cross-cultural experience. Students spend time studying both at the host and partner university and benefit from supervision at each. Upon graduation students will be awarded PhDs from the University of Sheffield and the partner university.

The scholarship award covers the cost of the UK/EU or overseas tuition fees and provides an annual, tax-free maintenance stipend at the standard UK research rate (£14,553 for 2017/18).

The studentships are linked to the following research divisions at Sheffield and we welcome proposals in any area of research that relate to colleagues in these divisions:

 

Marketing, International Enterprise and Strategy (MIES) Division

Home to the Centre for Research in Marketing and Society (CReiMS) and the Centre for Regional Economic and Enterprise Development (CREED).

 

Partnership with Egade

The student will have two supervisors from Sheffield University Management School and two associate supervisors from EGADE. Potential topics might include:

  • How can employees/managers be encouraged to be more pro-environmental in their workplaces and how might incentives be employed to do this with in developing economies?
  • Luxury Mexico: Understanding brand opportunities and consumption is critical at a time when South America is poised to become one of the largest luxury markets – but what factors matter?
  • The study of sustainable consumption and developing economies have been studied in developed economies, but as economies develop is it the right time to integrate sustainability and CSR into business and consumer decision making?
  • What is the role of strategic management in UK and Mexican social enterprises, and how do their strategic management processes differ?
  • Environmental labelling and social certification practices in the apparel industry in developing economies, how is this influencing production and consumption in Mexico?
     

Partnership with Kobe

The student will have two supervisors from Sheffield University Management School and two associate supervisors from Kobe University. Potential topics might include:

  • Supply Chain Audit: How is audit implemented in supply chain management process in Japanese global companies in comparison to the UK counterparts? What are the differences in its social impact?
  • How can employees/managers be encouraged to be more pro-environmental in their workplaces and how might incentives be employed to do this?
  • Luxury Japan: Understanding brand opportunities and consumption is critical in luxury markets – but what factors matter?
  • A study of sustainable consumption and how sustainability and CSR relate to business and consumer decision making?
  • Environmental labelling and social certification practices in the apparel industry in developing economies, how is this influencing production and consumption in Japan?

Work, Employment, People and Organisations Division

Home to the Institute of Work Psychology (IWP) and the Work Organisation and Employment Relations Research Centre (WOERRC).

 

Partner to be confirmed

The student will have two supervisors from Sheffield University Management School and two associate supervisors from the partner university (TBC). Topics might include:

  • Work psychology, including:
  • Individual, team and organisational effectiveness
  • Employee wellbeing, motivation and stressors at work leadership
  • Creativity and innovation at work
  • Organisational change and development
  • Human resource management and organisational behaviour, including:
  • Employment relations
  • Work organisation
  • Health organisation
  • Work and the labour market

Interviews will take place at Sheffield University Management School.

* Please note: Sheffield University Management School is awaiting University approval of the International Doctoral Programme. Until approval has been received, applications should be submitted and offers will be issued for the Standard PhD in Sheffield University Management School. Applicants are invited to indicate in the supporting statement their interest in studying the International Doctoral Programme. If and when the International Doctoral Programme receives University approval it will be possible for interested offer-holders to transfer their offer to the International Doctoral Programme.
