SCIENCE COMMUNICATOR

PEROMNES POST LEVEL 8

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Science communication and acting as assistant to the Science Centre Manager;

  • The management of in-house and outreach programmes showcasing UP research achievements, development and implementation of educational activities and promoting public understanding of science.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • BSc Science degree;

  • Two years’ experience in:

    • A science centre environment;

    • Fundraising;

    • Presenting science workshops/projects;

  • Three years’ experience in:

    • Organising, managing and co-ordinating learner and student groups;

    • Project management in a Science Centre;

    • Science education and science communication.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Up to date knowledge of science related themes and events;

  • Appropriate language and communication skills;

  • Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to non-scientists;

  • Creativity to identify suitable themes and projects for workshops and outreach;

  • Social media skills;

  • Basic exhibit maintenance skills.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Postgraduate degree;

  • Science communication qualification (certificate, diploma or degree);

  • Experience in the following:   

    • A science centre environment;

    • Project co-ordination;

    • Science communication;       

    • Training;

    • Social media;

    • Website content management.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 428 870 to R 529 717 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
