Job Details

Do you have a strong technical background in spinal biomechanics? Would you like to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to address a clinically-driven challenge?

This project is part of a major EPSRC-funded collaboration with the University of Oxford entitled Ultraspine: Ultrasound-Enabled Minimally Invasive Disc Replacement. The aim of the programme of work is to develop a minimally invasive therapy for the removal and repair of degenerated intervertebral discs, the condition responsible for the majority of low back pain.

The aim of this project is to biomechanically assess the performance of treated spines in comparison to healthy and degenerated controls. The work will involve the in vitro testing of specimens using unique facilities developed at Leeds, as well as contributing to ongoing computational simulation to evaluate a wider range of scenarios. The work will include the development of optimised testing protocols that reduce the timescale of the in vitro tests. Specimens will be imaged using microCT and the study will include aspects of image processing as well as extensive data analysis of the in vitro test results. The project will involve close collaboration with colleagues from engineering, chemistry and biology, as well as with our partners at the University of Oxford and leading spine surgeons.

You will have a strong background in spinal biomechanics with experience of in vitro testing, and have a positive, proactive approach to working in a multidisciplinary team with engineers, biologists and clinicians.
