European Research Council funded Postdoctoral Research Associate working on the properties and applications of Mechanically Chiral Molecules

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Southampton working with Dr Steve Goldup on an ERC funded project that combines aspects of Organic Synthesis andSupramolecular Chemistry to develop new applcations of mechanically chiral molecules, with a particular focus on their applications as catalysts, materials and sensors. The successful candidate will apply the group’s methodology for the synthesis of mechanically chiral molecules (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2014, 136, 4817). In addition to carrying out research, the successful candidate will also liaise with industrial and academic partners and take a leadership role in the group.

Applications are invited from candidates having, or about to obtain a *PhD in chemistry, with a solid grounding in organic synthesis and supramolecular chemistry. Experience of laboratory organisation and management is a significant benefit. You are expected to have an excellent work ethic and commitment to achieve the project aims, as well as excellent organisational skills in order to manage the research project on a day to day basis. You will also have opportunities to develop your supervision, writing, and communication skills, excellent preparation for a career in academia or industry. Duties will also include assisting in the training and supervision of PhD and final year project students.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The successful candidate will be based in the modern synthetic chemistry laboratories in the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton. Support for synthetic chemistry is excellent with world class MS, NMR and X-ray facilities, each supported by dedicated specialist staff. On-line resources are first class, with most journals and SciFinder and Reaxys databases accessible on-line.

The position is full time and available for 12 months in the first instance. The starting salary will be £29,301 per annum. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where relevant this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
