The Center of Mathematical Science Applied to Industry (CeMEAI), University of São Paulo, has one opening for a post-doctoral researcher in machine learning and data mining. CeMEAI is recruiting a post-doctoral researcher in these areas to investigate new approaches and the use of AutoML for industry-related data in the Analytics Laboratory, associated with CeMEAI. AutoML looks for innovative alternatives to automate the use of machine learning techniques, which includes issues like metalearning, transfer learning and combinatorial optimization.


The position is located at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science (ICMC), University of São Paulo, in the city of São Carlos, SP, Brazil. São Carlos, with around 220,000 inhabitants, is situated in the central region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The city is 240 km from the State capital, the city of São Paulo, and 850 meters above see level. Due to its mild climate, the city is known as "Brazilian Capital of the Climate". With its growing number of high technology startups and companies, São Carlos is also known as "Brazilian Capital of Technology". São Carlos is the Brazilian city with the highest ratio of PhDs per capita. São Carlos has a strong research and education reputation, being the only city in Brazil, of its size, with two of the best Brazilian universities, University of São Paulo and Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), and two Embrapa Research Centers.

 

Education requirements: a PhD degree in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, data science or statistics. Applicants are expected to have finished, or be about to finish their PhD degrees.
 

Required skills and expertise
Besides a very solid background in computer science, statistics and mathematics, the candidate should also have:
- Strong publication record in the area of machine learning and data mining, mainly in machine learning and data mining related journals with high impact factor;
- Very good knowledge of written and spoken English (Portuguese is not required);
- Strong background knowledge in machine learning, data mining and statistics;
- Good knowledge of languages and tools, such as Python, R, C, C++ or Java;
- Strong team work capacity;
- Knowledge of Big Data and Data Streams is a plus.
Annual income: approx. R$ 81,831.60 (tax free) + (research grant) + airplane tickets + (installation support). You can rent a good flat close to the University by R$ 1,500.00 a month.
