Job Purpose

To teach and advise undergraduate, postgraduate or CPD students within own subject area and within an established teaching programme, managed supervised by member of staff with ultimate responsibility for the design, delivery and assessment of the teaching programme.

The main focus of this role is to provide clinical input to the development and maintenance of materials and assessments for use in the MBChB programme. This will involve developing a thorough knowledge of the Birmingham MBChB and using knowledge of how medical students learn to contribute to the design / updating of MBChB modules. The post holder will work with senior academic staff, educational development specialists, and members of the educational technology team as well as appropriate administrative staff to meet these objectives. The College has recently opened a small clinical skills centre. This will be used by all professional programmes on the course. The post holder can be expected to have key involvement in the development of the centre, including planning and preparation of scenarios used in teaching and also to supervise and facilitate some of the scenarios that are run in the centre. The post holder, as a qualified clinician with at least two years of hospital experience, will be expected to provide subject matter expertise in medicine and in accordance with Good Medical Practice will be expected to engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the research efforts in medical education and to participate in the development of research proposals for own or joint pedagogical research. If appropriate to the postholder, an honorary NHS appointment will be sought with one of the local education providers in order to maintain clinical competency during the time in this post. The post holder will be expected to undertake a Postgraduate Certification in Education for Health Professionals run at the University if this level of qualification has not been previously obtained.

This role does not have any line management responsibility. This post is not directly linked to income generation.

The role is designed to improve the teaching materials available for medical students. It therefore has the potential to affect up to 2000 students per year. However, the role will primarily focus on clinical teaching resources, the more immediate impact will be to 1200 students per year. This is also true for work undertaken on assessments within the MBChB. It is not anticipated that the post holder will hold research grants, but may contribute to development of grants and related proposals in relation to educational research work being carried out on the Birmingham MBChB.

The organisation chart demonstrates that the post holder’s reporting line is to the Vice Dean. There are no roles reporting to the role-holder. Close working interactions will however occur with the education development specialists and the Technology Enhanced Learning team in order to deliver this role.
