Job Purpose

As part of the College’s Research & Knowledge Transfer Office (RKTO), and as part of the wider research support infrastructure of Research and Innovation Services (RIS) at the University of Birmingham, the Research Facilitator post is an integral part of delivering research development support to academics within the College of Arts and Law (CAL).
The College of Arts and Law brings together a number of disciplines with wide ranging areas of research. Funding for its various research activities comes principally from research councils including AHRC, ESRC and NERC and other national or regional government bodies and European initiatives such as Horizon 2020 and charities such as the Leverhulme Trust. The Research Facilitator role is central to the College’s and University’s Research Strategy for promoting world-leading research across the College.
Research and Innovation Services (RIS) is a unit of the wider Finance Office and supports research across the University through local teams based in the Colleges and specialist teams based at the Research Park (focusing on aspects such as EU, International, Regional and Innovation funding sources). RIS, alongside the wider College of CAL RKTO, Research Support Group and functions based in Strategic Planning and Library Services, form part of the wider research support ecosystem of the University.
This role is offered as a one year post, in response to increasing staffing numbers and anticipated funding opportunities over the coming year. The post holder will undertake selected agreed duties from the inclusive list of duties below, for example the post holder will be responsible for proposing a programme of researcher training and delivering this in collaboration with research facilitators, supporting submissions to specific schemes e.g. British Academy Small Grant scheme, EU Advanced Grants and managing the preparation of funding applications for one-off opportunities as they arise. The permanent Research Facilitators will remain as the designated contact point for their current Schools, and the temporary Research Facilitator will work in collaboration with them to deliver specific agreed aspects of research facilitation in the College.
