The University of Auckland Business School invites applications for a Full Professor or Associate Professor in the Department of Commercial Law.

The University of Auckland has a student population of 40,000 students and is a founding member of Universitas 21 (a network of major international research universities).  It is located in the heart of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city and dominant commercial centre.

Faculty

Located in the “state of the art”, purpose-built Owen G Glenn Building, the Business School is ideally positioned as a national hub for academia, business and government. The Business School reaches well over 12,000 individuals directly each year through its academic programmes, executive development courses, and the courses and programmes it operates with its partner organisations such as the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Velocity, the Icehouse and the New Zealand Leadership Institute. The Business School is uniquely placed to be able to influence and assist:

  • a broad range of participants from start-ups, to owner-managers of SME’s, to major corporates;
  • other faculties within the university and Uniservices (the University’s technology transfer office); and
  • the establishment of government policy at regional and national levels. 

 

The Business School has eight departments including Commercial Law and is accredited by AACSB International, EQUIS and AMBA.  The Business School is the leading business school in New Zealand, with a strong commitment to high quality teaching and research, and well developed networks in New Zealand’s business community and in international research networks.

 

The Department of Commercial Law

The Department of Commercial Law is the leading centre of commercial law and taxation research and teaching in New Zealand, with one of the largest groups of commercial law academics in Australasia. Staff have a wide range of teaching and research interests including the areas of corporate, company, insolvency, contract, finance, intellectual property and innovation, consumer law, blockchain and taxation. Members of the Department are highly-qualified and experienced academics or practitioners who have made important contributions to the discipline by writing books or publishing regularly in top-ranked international journals.


Together with the Faculty of Law, the Department runs the Research Centre for Business Law, which publishes the New Zealand Business Law Quarterly. The Department also hosts the New Zealand Governance Centre, which has links with other similar centers.

 

Position Overview

The main purpose of this position is to:

  • Contribute leadership to the Department’s research agenda.
  • Contribute leadership to the Department
  • Contribute leadership to, and promote academic development of, the teaching programmes of the Department at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and contribute to post-experience teaching in the Faculty.
  • Support and mentor research and teaching staff.
  • Teach and supervise students to high standards.
  • Contribute to increasing the impact and relevance of the Department for business, government and practitioners in the Auckland region and in New Zealand.
  • Work closely with the Dean, Associate Deans, Heads of Departments and key stakeholders to further the mission of the Business School and the University.
  • Actively progress individual and collaborative research across the Department, the Faculty, and also across the wider University community as appropriate.

 

The position is a continuing position and is intended for candidates with leadership and managerial experience, a relevant PhD and an international research portfolio. While all applications will be considered, preference will be given to applicants who are prepared to take on the role of Head of Department in the near future.

The candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in research in commercial law and will be able to demonstrate excellence in the teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Evidence of leadership in research, a significant international standing, high quality teaching and supervision at PhD level are required.
