Institute Director, Hotchkiss Brain Institute Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services - Calgary, AB

The University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine, and Alberta Health Services invite applications for the position of Director, Hotchkiss Brain Institute. This is a key leadership position within the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and Alberta Health Services (AHS). The successful candidate would be offered an academic appointment with Tenure at the Professor level, a generous start-up package and the opportunity for recruitment. The Director appointment is a five-year term, renewable, subject to review.

The Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) is an internationally recognized centre of excellence in brain and mental health research and education. HBI was created in 2004 as a partnership between an iconic leader in the Calgary community, Harley Hotchkiss, the University of Calgary and the Health care sector.  The HBI remains true to this partnership today between the community, dedicated faculty and researchers at the University’s CSM and those from AHS who are directly involved in the delivery of care, and with the ongoing stewardship of the Hotchkiss family. The Institute was created to inspire discovery and apply knowledge towards innovative solutions for neurological and mental health disorders. The HBI (http://www.hbi.ucalgary.ca/) has three strategic research themes – 1) Brain and Behaviour, 2) Healthy Brain Aging, and 3) Neural Injury and Repair – supported by crosscutting platforms including Imaging, Photonics and Optogenetics, and Neurostimulation. The Institute also has an extensive portfolio of education and training programs. The HBI 2015 strategic plan (http://hbi.ucalgary.ca/files/hbi/hbi_strategic_plan_2015.pdf) outlines the Institute’s path to accomplishing its vision of Healthy Brains for Better Lives. Linkages with other CSM Institutes, other University of Calgary Faculties, as well as with allied community-based services are essential to the Institute’s success. Institute membership is interdisciplinary and is comprised of over 130 researchers, educators, clinicians, and allied health professionals from across nine faculties. The Institute attracts research revenue in excess of $40 million annually and has particular strengths in multiple sclerosis, spinal cord, nerve injury and pain, traumatic brain injury, stress, epilepsy, mental health, stroke, dementia and cognitive disorders, and movement disorders – all are key areas of considerable past and ongoing investment by the CSM and community partners. The HBI leads the campus-wide University of Calgary Brain and Mental Health research strategy (http://ucalgary.ca/research/files/research/15-unv-007-bmh-research-strategy.lowres.final_.pdf).

The Institute and its founding partners are searching for an outstanding and proven leader and scientist to assume the role of Director, HBI. We are seeking a leader who can be effective as a leader in terms of HBI’s relationship with the community as well as as in the areas of research and practice. The Director will provide scientific and administrative leadership to shape and guide the Institute’s strategic direction, and to attract and manage financial resources to achieve the Institute’s goals. Communicating and reporting to the Institute’s partners, community, and members about the Institute’s programs and performance will be an important aspect of the Director’s role. The ability to collaborate effectively with other CSM Leaders to support HBI’s participation in the school’s focus on precision medicine is essential. The Director will also manage considerable financial resources supporting the core operations of the Institute.

Qualifications include a PhD and/or MD. The selected candidate must have a strong academic background with experience commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Professor, as well as demonstrated internationally recognized research and educational achievements, proven leadership strengths and at least five years academic leadership experience. If the successful candidate wishes to practice clinically, she/he must be eligible for medical licensure in the Province of Alberta.
