SENIOR LECTURER: ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

BACKGROUND:

The University of Pretoria has embarked on a major programme to enhance the research capacity of the Department of Chemistry. This stems from an appreciation of the fact that the fundamental discipline of chemistry underpins some of the most critical research topics in both the material or energy sciences and the biological sciences. As an initial step towards positioning the University as the partner of choice in all matters relating to chemistry in the region, the country and the continent, researchers are being sought who have an interest in furthering both their own academic disciplines and the relevant applied disciplines. A position currently exists in the Department of Chemistry for a Senior Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Lead and work in a team undertaking research in renewable energy programmes such as using photovoltaic structures and electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide into liquid fuels;
  • Present lectures on general chemistry to first year students, as well as specialist courses in Electrochemistry;
  • Supervise postgraduate students;
  • Initiate collaborative research projects with scientists from all disciplines, both in and beyond the University;
  • Interact with research and development projects conducted by local and international industry;
  • Expand collaboration with academics worldwide;
  • Solicit research funding from local and international industry and funding agencies.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A relevant PhD in Chemistry;
  • Experience in lecturing at junior and senior level, including Electrochemistry;
  • Experience in electro-catalytic conversion of chemicals in the energy cycle as well as synthesis and characterisation of photovoltaic and nanostructures;
  • A record of publications;
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • The ability to attract postgraduate students;
  • Good language and communication skills;
  • The ability to work under pressure;
  • Good interpersonal and leadership skills.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

Experience in the following will be a recommendation:

  • Research experience to include Langmuir-Blodgett film technology and computational chemistry in renewable energies;
  • NRF rating or evidence of being evaluated;
  • Experience in leading joint research projects;
  • Experience of working in teams both nationally and internationally;
  • Record of fundraising for research projects;
  • Post-doctoral experience.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 508 817 to R 654 071 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
