Job Details

Details

Phototherapy has been successfully applied in a range of healthcare fields for therapeutic purposes including photodisinfection (~400nm) and photobiomdulation (~600-1000nm). It is proposed that this technology has the potential to reduce infection and promote healing in contaminated battlefield wounds, ultimately leading to development of devices that can be used to determine efficacy in a clinical setting.

Project Aim: To develop ex vivo infected wound models for the investigation of novel phototherapy techniques using multiple and simultaneous wavelengths of visible and infra-red light for wound healing and bacterial decontamination.

The successful PhD student will conduct funded research at the University of Birmingham (UoB) and the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (DSTL) where you will have access to a wide range of in-house techniques applicable to this research project.

Skills utilised during this project:

The successful applicant will develop a range of key skills in photophysics (e.g. light delivery at a cellular level and include wavelength, dose, tissue penetration and beam profiling), microbiology (including growth of a range of clinically relevant isolates as well as development of biofilm models to investigate antimicrobial activity) and cell biology (determining beneficial host responses to light irradiation e.g. anti-inflammatory and promotion of tissue repair).

It is therefore essential applicants have a good range of basic laboratory skills, and desirable that applicants have experience in some or all of these specific research areas.

Person Specification

Applicants should have a strong background in microbiology and cell biology pertinent to this project and hold or realistically expect to obtain at least an Upper Second Class Honors Degree in a relevant subject.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Mike Milward (m.r.milward@bham.ac.uk)

Funding Notes

The successful candidate will receive funding for a full EPSRC studentship. It should be noted that this application is open to UK nationals only and will involve a minimum of 3 months working at the DSTL laboratories at Porton Down, Wiltshire.
