The Role

The team is on evolving journey driving the next phase of our Cyber Security defence implementation and you will help shape that journey. We have a highly complex environment that hosts and facilitates world class research that places the University of Southampton into the top 1% of universities across the world.
You will directly support and develop the vision that Cyber Security is a core service to the University in the protection of its information and its assets, you will relish solving real world challenges by proactive and consultative working and work within iSolutions development teams. You will be embedded within iSolutions teams to ensure that security controls are a core component of the development of services / software. You will be working and leading within the framework of Information Security management based upon ISO 27001 and also CIS’s Critical Security Controls. The opportunity to expand upon your existing broad base of security skills and techniques in addition to gaining experience in increasing the security posture of the University will provide for a satisfying and rewarding career.
The University will be undertaking a significant shift in its protection arrangements for Cyber Security and privacy protection requirements and this position represents a significant and rewarding opportunity for assisting in that change.
The Person
You will bring to the role extensive, relevant knowledge and experience of IT Security best practice including an in depth background in Network Support, software management and / or Security with ideally experience of configuration, risk management and support.
You would possess a deep understanding and experience across Operational delivery, IT Security, including firewalls, software vulnerability assessment and management, security standards, process mapping and policies within a large and diverse environment.
Your ability to understand and apply data protection frameworks which may include ISO 27001, CSC Critical Security Controls, and PCI DSS which have significant added value to the University would complement your structured thinking and working approach.
Vulnerability scanning techniques and mitigation methods would ideally be something you have had experience or exposure to and if not be able to demonstrate the ability to acquire. Your critical thinking skills would identify “false positive” outputs and be able to demonstrate your rationale supporting your conclusions.
Your responsiveness to actual or potential security incidents and breaches would be an opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to cyber security, the role itself and ideally your potential to lead. Your ability to reflect and propose improvements to avoid future incidents would be your instinctive response. Experience of working within an environment where controlled yet urgent responses are required would be welcome.
Communication
You will be a self-motivated and dynamic individual who is able to challenge and influence others, develop and maintain collaborative working relations across IT and non IT departments; your high level, proven inter-personal and communication skills are essential and demonstrable.
