Job Details

Are you an enthusiastic and motivated researcher with an interest applying engineering approaches to solving global health challenges? Would you like to use computational and experimental fluid dynamics principles to understand the transmission of airborne disease? Are you interested in the opportunity to gain experience working in a cross-disciplinary project with partners in the UK and South Africa?

You will play a key role in a new MRC funded project “Targeting airborne bacterial infection: Studies on patient- and laboratory-generated Mycobacterium tuberculosis aerosols”. Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world’s most deadly diseases and is transmitted by microorganisms aerosolised through actions such as coughing. By better understanding the physical and biological aspects of the aerosolised bacteria, this research will help better detection of TB cases and the development of new infection control strategies. The project brings together expertise in TB microbiology (Leicester University), fluid dynamics (Leeds), bioaerosols (Public Health England) and clinical treatment of TB (University of Pretoria, South Africa), and is part of a wider initiative by these partners to understand and effectively control the airborne transmission of TB. The post will be jointly supervised between Professor Cath Noakes, Dr Louise Fletcher (Civil Engineering) and Professor Nik Kapur (Mechanical Engineering).

Holding a PhD (or be close to completion) or equivalent experience in an engineering or science discipline that involves fluid dynamics, you will have experience of developing and applying computational fluid dynamics simulations, using commercial or open-source code.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Professor Cath Noakes, Professor of Environmental Engineering for Buildings,School of Civil Engineering.
