DEPARTMENT OF COMPANION ANIMAL CLINICAL STUDIES

LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER: SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Small Animal Medicine;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital and surrounding community, including participation in a 24-hour service;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
  • Research and publications in scientific journals;
  • Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department;
  • Academic self-development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Lecturer:

  1. A BVSc or BVMCh degree;
  2. Master’s or equivalent postgraduate degree (in exceptional cases a veterinarian with only an undergraduate degree may be appointed, subject to a commitment to acquiring a Master’s within the period of their probation);
  3. Registration as a Veterinarian with the SAVC, or eligible for immediate registration;
  4. Demonstrate the potential to become competent lecturer at undergraduate level;
  5. Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist clinician in an academic environment.

 

Senior Lecturer:

  1. A BVSc or BVMCh degree;
  2. An appropriate MMedVet degree;
  3. Registration as a specialist in Small Animal Medicine with the SAVC, or eligible for immediate registration;
  4. Three years’ general Small Animal Medicine experience;
  5. Demonstrate the potential to become competent lecturer at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  6. Demonstrate experience and/or interest in research;
  7. At least two peer reviewed publications as first or senior author.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  1. Proven knowledge and competence in Small Animal Medicine;
  2. Research interest appropriate to the position;
  3. Commitment to obtain further postgraduate qualification in reasonable time;
  4. Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  5. Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools, e.g. software;
  • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience;
  • Exposure to research in an appropriate field.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
