Job Details

Applications are invited for a fully funded Research Associate post for 12 months starting by the end of September 2017.  The post is funded as part of the Innovate UK ATI (Aerospace Technology Institute) Airbus led Agile Wing Integration (AWI) research project.   The Research Associate will be supervised by Professor J.E. Cooper, Professor M. Lowenberg and Professor S.A. Neild from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol.

There is a great emphasis at the moment on green aircraft designs, influenced by the Flightpath-2050 initiative to cut aircraft emissions.  In the medium and long term period it is evident that significant steps will be required to design more efficient aircraft that are able to meet ever stringent environmental requirements, and key to this is the multidisciplinary integration and optimisation of a range of different technologies. The goals set in Flightpath-2050 complement recent work in this area at the University of Bristol that has concentrated upon the exploitation of aeroelastic deflections to achieve these goals.

The AWI project is aimed at developing a step change in performance expectations via specific developments in the commercial aircraft conceptual design and technology maturity process, with several disruptive technologies being considered.  The RA will work on improving the loads and weight predictions of novel aircraft configurations and to efficiently determine the effects of uncertainty on these processes.

The salary is in the range £32,004 - £40,523 per annum depending upon experience.  Applicants are expected to have a good first degree (or equivalent) in engineering and a PhD in aeroelasticity, loads or a related subject.  Experience in the use of Finite Elements, Aeroelasticity software and optimisation packages would be beneficial.

The RA will be based at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bristol, but will also be expected to spend short placements working at Airbus, and also with the other partners in the AWI project.

Please note, there are other research posts being recruited to as part of this project.  For further information regarding these posts, please refer to the below job numbers.

ACAD102819 - Research Associate/Senior Research Associate in Aeroelastic Modelling(AWI)
