Job Purpose

The University of Birmingham is continuing to make strategic investments across its research base in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences.

We are seeking to appoint to a fixed-term 5 year post in Geography at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level. The successful candidate will join either the Human or Physical Geography Research Groups, but will be expected to develop a portfolio of activity which explicitly pursues the considerable interdisciplinary opportunities offered by a School with immense research reach and diversity.

Research at GEES challenges boundaries between environmental systems, and there are considerable opportunities for further innovative research collaborations at these environmental ‘interfaces’. Candidates approaching this role through the elemental within and beyond material geographies could think through matter such as earthliness, the subterranean, lithics, palaeontology and territoriality, and could consider the material and elemental geographies implicated in tectonics, palaeobiology, paleoclimatology, and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, in partnership with our Geosystems Research group and our award-winning Lapworth Museum of Geology. With regard to air, the aeolian, aerographies, atmospheres and atmospherics, they could draw upon our established strengths in atmospheric chemistry, meteorology and urban atmospheres, nanomaterials and the nature of environmental contamination. They could explore the nature and materiality of fluidity, water and its biophysical and hydrosocial properties, hydrodynamics and water infrastructures. Researchers within both the Human and Physical Geography Research Groups collaborate with applied scientists within the Geosystems and Environmental Health Sciences Research Groups within the School, and with colleagues across campus, and this post offers an opportunity to design and develop interdisciplinary activities.

The Human Geography group has four research subthemes: Geopolitics, transition and the carceral; Adapting to energy and environmental uncertainties; Bodies, landscapes, materialities; and Urban and regional studies. The Physical Geography Research Group has core research strengths in Ecohydrology, Biogeochemistry, Biogeography, Fluvial Geomorphology, Wetland and Forest Hydrology, Hydro-Climatology and Sociohydrology. Substantive recent investments in the School include the Birmingham Institute for Forest Research (BIFoR) and state-of-the-art mesocosm facilities, and we have a unique and extensive Map Collection.

Evidence of a strong track record (as appropriate to career stage) in publishing work of the highest academic quality and impact is essential, alongside a track record of / potential for obtaining external research funding. In addition to demonstrating (or showing potential for) internationally excellent research, applicants must have a commitment to delivering excellent teaching and learning at all levels (i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate, and higher research degrees) and communicating the relevance and impact of their research to stakeholders. The successful candidate will be involved in administrative tasks (appropriate to their appointment grade) to support delivery of research and teaching within the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. The appointee will also be expected to supervise postgraduate taught and doctoral research projects in relevant areas.

There would be an expectation that the appointee will engage internationally, building on the strong links already established by the University with European and wider funding agencies and partners, and through a Global Engagement strategy that has partnerships in Brazil, China, India and North America as well as through Universitas 21.
