Research Fellow in In-situ Tribochemistry

This role is one of eight Research Fellow positions which have come about as a result of an EPSRC Programme Grant in Tribology being awarded. You will join a vibrant research institute (Institute of Functional Surfaces) and be part of a project investigating the science of friction.

Synchrotron techniques for in-situ tribology and tribochemistry Friction and wear performance of boundary lubricated systems is greatly determined by the properties of the tribofilm formed in the lubricated interface. These films are formed in-situ, in most of the cases as a result of the tribological process, from chemical reactions of the lubricated surface with the environment and medium used as a lubricant.  Prediction of friction and wear performance of these systems requires real-time identification of chemical reactions in-situ and quantification of the reaction rates. This project will utilise the synchrotron (non-vacuum) and other techniques for developing tools and techniques for obtaining the tribochemistry interface processes in-situ and in real-time. 

You will have a PhD (or near completion) in Tribology, together with astrong background in tribology, materials or surface chemistry, and experience in use of synchrotron and development of advanced original experimental techniques.
