The School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Queensland is an acknowledged leader in biomedical sciences in Australia. Our University is typically placed around 30 in the world’s top 100 for biomedicine, according to The Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Our School’s research strengths include cell and developmental biology; cell physiology; functional anatomy; molecular pharmacology; and neuroscience. Our interests encompass animal behaviour; the biology of disease; drug development; marine science; neural regeneration; neuropathology; and pedagogical studies.
The role
The successful appointee will be provided with a School-sponsored PhD scholarship, including stipend support commensurable with current Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rates. The appointee will need to to apply for ongoing support via the APA, UQ and other PhD scholarship schemes, as well as national competitive travel grants to support attendance at conferences and professional development courses. The appointee will work on a project that is aimed at investigating the interaction between plasma proteins and various clinically-relevant PEGylated and non-PEGylated nanoparticles, and how this interaction affects the susceptibility to, or treatment of patients with, neurodegenerative diseases.
This project addresses fundamental questions regarding the safety and utility of rapidly emerging nanomedicines and the impact these new drugs have on our ageing population. The role will involve molecular pharmacology, toxicology, cell culture and the pharmaceutical evaluation of nanoparticles in rodent models of neurodegenerative disease.
The person
This project is only suited to students who are highly driven and have a desire to persue a high level research career in molecular nanomedicine. Applicants should possess an appropriate qualification for entry into the PhD training scheme. They should have an outstanding track record of academic achievement, excellent laboratory skills that are relevant to the project and have the drive to lead this research-intensive PhD project. Applicants should have the ability to think critically, rationally and independently. Excellent verbal and written English skills are essential. Applicants should be comfortable working with small animal models and be willing to work with radiation.
Remuneration
This is a full-time, fixed term appointment at the APA stipend rate for 3 years. The stipend (2017 rate) will be at $26,682 p.a (indexed annually).
